La Vern Brown was born on October 2,1942 in Lake, MS to Denham and Winnie Johnson.
La Vern graduated from Sherman Hills High School in 1961. She continued on to TJ Harris College in Meridian, MS on a Basketball Scholarship from 1961-1962. She led her team to the State Championship in 1961 and many said if the WNBA was in existence she would have been drafted.

La Vern moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1962 where she stayed for a few months before moving to Las Vegas where she made this her home for 58 years. She married James Brown Sr. and to this union two sons were born.

La Vern was employed at central Telephone Company for many years and she quickly transitioned from Public Relations to Engineer. She was a very hard worker and proud of her accomplishments.
La Vern enjoyed sewing and planting in her garden in her spare time. Her favorite flower was the Mississippi Magnolia.
