Thurston David Winfree was born on September 12, 1959, to Lewis Paul Winfree and Dorothy Evelyn Winfree in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

Thurston was educated at Mt. Area High School and graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1978. He was active in several high school activities, including The Boy Scouts and he played saxophone in the band.

Thurston was a member of Mt. Hope Baptist Missionary Church in Mt. Union, PA. He had a deep love for music, and he passionately expressed it through DJ'ing for over 30 years. He was so eloquently dubbed, DJ Winjam. Thurston started his military career in the Air Force in 1978. He later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1979 to continue his military career. Thurston enjoyed helping others and spending time with his family and friends.
