Sarah Mayes

Sarah Lee Phelps was born in Tupelo, MS. on February 5, 1956 to Samuel Phelps and Robie Lee Vaughn Phelps. She shared a home along with 2 out of 4 siblings. Sarah was 7 when she and her siblings lost their mother. Sarah excelled in school despite not having a mother, graduating from Tupelo High School, and becoming a hard worker early on.

Sarah moved to Las Vegas in 1976 with Aunt Mamie Sue Vaughn Fields and joined the Culinary and Bartenders Union. Sarah grew up in church as a young child. Upon moving to Las Vegas, she was introduced to Buddhism through her cousin, Rosie Fields.

She worked at the Tropicana Hotel for a decade alongside her best friend, Sister Roberta Cowart. She also met other great friends, Barbara Jean, Chris, and Deloris.

Sarah moved to the Moulin Rouge in 1981 with her sister Bessie and family, where she met Carlos Mayes. The two dated and later married in 1986, making her, Sarah Lee Mayes. She later went on to work at the Hilton Hotel for another decade where Sarah retired to become a homemaker. She opened her home to any and everyone, all the while with a big smile and lots of love. She enjoyed cooking and eating. Sarah loved to go fishing with her husband and extended family. Willie and Margaret Smith. She loved to sing and collect albums and always jumped at the chance to get pictures of everyone. She was a vibrant soul, loyal friends, and a wonderful mother. Sarah confessed her life to rejoin Christ in 2005, being baptized once more under the leadership of Elder Seward Victorian. She moved to Lafayette, LA to be close to her sister for six years, until her health needed close supervision.
