OBITUARY
KOREAN WAR VETERAN CHARLIE SMITH JR. - aka "Baytee" and "Pops" - was
born May 30, 1930, in Marion, Alabama, to Charlie Smith Sr. (farmer) and Mrs. Canties
Halia Rutledge Smith (homemaker). Charlie was the eldest of four children. He had two
sisters, Rose and Senni, and one brother, James. Charlie was raised in Marion, Alabama,
graduating from Lincoln High School. He grew up with a strong sense of patriotism and
duty. Charlie enlisted in the Army at 20 years of age in 1950 and served bravely in the
Korean War for a 7-year tour of duty, earning several medals and commendations.
Charlie was united in matrimony to his first wife, Geraldine (née Albert) in 1952. Five
children were born to this union: Charles Evers, Brenda Joyce, Elinor Ersia, Jerome Leon,
and Patricia Ann. Charlie and Geraldine separated in 1971.
Charlie met his second wife, Annie Anita (née Barnes) in 1971 and was united in
matrimony in 1975. They moved to California with her daughter, Sheryl Ann, where they
resided until Annie's death in 1987.
Charlie met Cleon (née Smith) his third wife in Pomona, California, and married in
1988. Charlie and Cleon moved to Henderson, Nevada, in 1992 upon his retirement from
the railroad, dwelling there until his wife's passing in 2022.
Charlie moved to San Pedro, California, in June of 2022 to reside with his
stepdaughter, Sheryl, and son-in-law, Sam Robinson, where he lived until his homegoing
after a full, long life on December 27,2023
His three wives and two sons precede him in death. Charlie leaves fond memories
to cherish to his sister, Senni, his daughters: Brenda Smith-Williams, Elinor Smith, Pat
Smith, Sheryl Price-Robinson, and LaMetra Courts, his son-in-law, Sam Robinson, sister-
in-law, Roslyn Lockett and her husband, Andrew, his many beloved grandchildren, four
of which he personally raised: Heather Gaskins, Taylour Price-Robinson, Tiffany Courts,
and Donovan Courts, along with numerous great-grandchildren, relatives, in-laws, and
life-long friends
Charlie was a career railroad employee, retiring in 1992. He also held positions as
healthcare worker, and Pinkerton and Securitas security officer.
Charlie was as a generous, kind, and humorous man of faith, a devout Baptist, who
loved watching sports, television ("Highway to Heaven'"), fishing, gardening, casinos and
traveling. He was physically and mentally strong and a gourmand who loved his food-
"You can never go wrong with chicken and fish".
Charlie is so loved and will be dearly missed by his family and friends who will always
remember his courage, wisdom, and spirit.
